Rayvon Owen is sure to advance to the Top 12 on American Idol. His performance of Nick Jonas’ Jealous last week was perfect. As Karl Gumia wrote of Rayvon’s Jealous: “The vocals were on point. One of the best of the night.” Owen is definitely talented and his experience on stage gives him a level of confidence higher than the rest. Effogarty agrees: “This guy [Rayvon] is the only one with star potential out of all of the guys this season.” Watch out, Detroit. We’re pretty sure he’s going to sing a crowd-pleasing Lionel Richie song next.
But is Rayvon’s participation on American Idol fair? He’s already released an EP called Cycles which includes a track (‘Rescue’) co-written by 30 Seconds from Mars’ Steve Aiello. Rayvon might still be considered an amateur but he’s working with professionals. Rayvon competiting on American Idol reminds us of Alfonso Ribeiro competing on Dancing with the Stars. Ribeiro is a former professional dancer and yet he was still eligible to compete. And he won.
