In 1982, NASA sent a time capsule into space. It included examples of American life and culture in the 80s – images of Ronald Reagan, Rubik’s Cube, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man. Harmless, right? Well, not for aliens. In the forthcoming film Pixels, aliens misinterpret the arcade games as a declaration of war and attack Earth in the forms of the video games. Imagine a giant, illuminated Pacman chomping up taxi cabs on Fifth Avenue in New York City, and mad gorillas throwing ignited barrels of flame down on Wall Street. (Okay, who are you rooting for — mankind or the aliens?!) Directed by Chris Columbus, Pixels stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James.
Some gamers were surprised to see Pixels featuring Nintendo video game characters (Donkey Kong, Pac-Man) since the film was released by Sony. In the late 80s, Nintendo signed a deal with Sony to create a video game console. Long legal story short – Sony dropped its partnership with Nintendo and developed its own console aka PlayStation. Nintendo rolled out Wii. And then came Microsoft’s Xbox. Could Pixels open the door to a new Nintendo-Sony partnership? (Hey if DC and Marvel can do it!) Microsoft might feel like it’s being attacked by aliens!
