“Your life is your life,” begins Charles Bukowski’s short powerful prayer of a poem, “The Laughing Heart.” The generous Bukowski goes onto inform you of an essential fact about yourself that you should already know–that “you are marvelous.”
In the video below, the poet “who has resisted assimilation longest and most strenuously” is paired with a musical artist about whom we may confidently say the same. Tom Waits here reads Bukowski and the gravel in the poetry meets the gravel in Waits’ voice. Do yourself a favor and stop it before Bono starts in.
