Nicolle Wallace, the conservative piece of ABC’s morning gabfest The View, is good at swift, strong analysis. Taking up the controversy that Fashion Police co-host Giuliana Rancic stirred by saying a dread-locked Zendaya’s hair probably “smells like weed,” Wallace got to the bigger problem. It’s the fact that Fashion Police really misses the outsize, scorched earth comedy style of its late anchor, Joan Rivers. Without that, the show is “rudderless,” says Wallace.
“Joan Rivers said things that made me blush at home, alone, in my pajamas. But I would never have expected her to apologize. Because she was Joan Rivers,” Wallace said. That’s what Fashion Police needs. Wallace may have particular insight into the problem she describes. The View put together a whole new line-up this season–and it’s already lost two of its five newcomers, including Rosie O’Donnell, who was widely expected to play that rudder role.
