It all started with Inglourious Basterds. In the 2009 film set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, Brad Pitt played Lt. Aldo Raine, the gentile leader of “the Basterds.” That same year, Pitt provided the voice of Sgt. Bill Mauldin in the short film Beyond All Boundaries, which includes archival footage of WWII battles and stories. Beyond All Boundaries is shown exclusively at The National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
Last year Pitt starred in Fury. He portrayed Don “Wardaddy” Collier, an Army sergeant who commands a Sherman tank and his five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines in April 1945. Next on Pitt’s agenda is a film directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump). Not much is known about the plot yet other than it is set during…wait for it…World War II “and is epic in scope.” Maybe it’s just dinner conversation. While filming Fury, Pitt’s wife, Angelina Jolie, made her directorial debut with the WWII film, Unbroken.
