“Why? The King Of Love Is Dead”
Nina Simone, the singer whose attitude toward getting rid of segregation wasn’t always as non-violent as Dr. King’s, sang this song just three days after King was assassinated. It’s called “Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead).” It was written by Gene Taylor, who also played bass with Simone’s band.
The sadness and resignation in her voice is palpable. The sadness would no doubt remain, but she exchanged the resignation for renewed determination. Here it is. “Will the murders never cease?”
