It must be more fun around Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom set than you might guess from the heady, big-issue drama the HBO show delivers. Lead man Jeff Daniels couldn’t have more gravitas than he does as Sorkin’s anchorman, but he’s the same guy hitting the road this fall with Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber To.
Or take the devastatingly beautiful Olivia Munn, who plays Sloan Sabbith–the alliterative, multilingual, super-smart, mistake-prone newshound of Sorkin’s dreams. Munn arrived in Sorkin’s dreams taking an unusual route: lighting up The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a correspondent, where she was one of the funniest, most droll women on TV. Munn recently told Self magazine that “nothing’s better than having Jon Stewart think you’re funny.” And yet does the serious so astutely. Munn can probably even dance and sing–we’ll see it all soon, no doubt. Munn’s characters are so strong she can even be a role model in retrospect: she had a Newsroom episode predating The Fappening in which an ex posted nude photos of her online and she had to deal with it in public as the pics went viral. Her character’s response was like a handbook for anybody afflicted by the horrible hack of 2014–or the next one. And Munn does movies, too. So not just drama and comedy but horror–even scarier, maybe, than having nude photos of you out there. Demons and stuff. See below–Munn in Deliver Us From Evil.
