NBC’s new show Constantine is based on DC Comics’ Hellblazer series, created by Alan Moore. The TV show is all about John Constantine, a con man turned supernatural detective who is trying to protect humanity from a gathering supernatural threat. Some Hellblazer fans will be disappointed to see John Constantine without a cigarette (he is a chain smoker in the comics) and straight (he’s bisexual in print).
Constantine executive producer Daniel Cerone said regarding John Constantine of the comics, “there might have been one or two issues where he’s seen getting out of bed with a man. So [maybe] 20 years from now? But there are no immediate plans.” Many fans say NBC is “straight-washing” the character – changing a LGBTQ character into a straight one. Constantine will premiere Friday, October 24 on NBC at 10pm, after Grimm.
