British actor Tom Hiddleston (Thor, The Avengers) put on his best Southern twang to sing Hank Williams’ song “Move It on Over” at the Wheatland Music Festival this weekend. This isn’t a fluke. Hiddleston, the Eton and Cambridge educated actor, will play Williams in the upcoming biopic I Saw the Light. The title refers to Williams’ 1948 country gospel song which Williams used to sing at the end of all his shows. More than half a century after its debut, in 2005, the song reached No. 1 on CMT’s 20 Greatest Songs of Faith.
The film I Saw The Light, which will be released in 2015, is based on the book Hank Williams: The Biography written by Colin Escott. Although it might seem like a strange casting choice — choosing a refined Brit to portray a honky tonk singing legend from Alabama, country music fans should rest a little easier. On the set will be Nashville’s Carter Little and two-time Grammy winner Rodney Crowell to supervise.
