When Jerry Seinfeld was asked recently “What makes a great bit?” he quickly replied: “I love Brian Regan’s ‘Donut Lady’.” Seinfeld describes the now famous bit from a comedian’s perspective: “I’m sure when he [Regan] first wrote ‘Donut Lady’ he didn’t think this is going to really hit people hard…That’s not planned. It just happened.”
‘Donut Lady‘ is about the decision process–and silly exchanges between you and a donut lady behind the counter as you select the donuts you want to make up a dozen. As if you don’t know how to subtract, the ‘donut lady’ counts down as you pick them: “You have eight left…you have six left.” And then panic ensues when you make a mistake. Probably not surprising about Jerry Seinfeld liking a donut bit, really. His new show, after all, is about getting coffee.
