Singer Mariah Carey fired her manager, Jermaine Dupri (Janet Jackson’s ex-boyfriend), after weak album sales of her 14th studio album Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse. Sales were elusive too. The record sold just 58,000 copies in the first week. After parting ways with Carey, Dupri released a statement: “when I’m not allowed to do what I do, then I know it’s time for me to move on.”
Carey is now working with Kevin Liles, the former president of Def Jam, who also manages Jay Z and Ludacris. Liles wrote the book “From Intern to President, Make It Happen—The Hip-Hop Generation Guide to Success.” Working with Mariah, Liles may need to remind himself of Rule #1: Find Your Will. “You will need that passion to drive you to make it happen against seemingly impossible odds.”
