George R.R. Martin–the enigmatic author whose Song of Ice and Fire epic is the basis for HBO’s Game Of Thrones—admitted that readers have figured out what happens at the end of the series. Martin was speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. There are so many theories out there, Martin implied, and some of them happen to be right. That’s the way the odds go.
“At least one or two readers had put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues that I’d planted in the books and came to the right solution,” Martin said, according to the Telegraph. There are two books left in the series and Martin seems a little disappointed that fans had it figured out. Who knows? It’s still in the author’s hands–perhaps one dark night as he sits alone at his desk he’ll change the ending he has in mind, confounding fans once again, even though he says now, “I can’t change the plans.” Besides, he didn’t say which fans were right.
