Dolly Parton still has it. The 68-year-old songbird recently sat down in a denim dress with an acoustic guitar on her lap and sang the heartstring-tugging “My Tennessee Mountain Home.” The performance was for a video/commercial to promote the state of Tennessee as a great place to take the family for a summer vacation. And it just so happens that Parton owns the state’s top tourist attraction – Dollywood.
“My Tennessee Mountain Home” has become the theme song for Dollywood. Parton wrote the lyrics back in 1973, based on a letter she wrote to her parents, shortly after leaving her small hometown for Nashville. Parton is so well-known as a performer that her songwriting is often overlooked. She once told the New York Times: ”People know I write songs, but I doubt they know how serious I am about it.” In fact, she’s written more than 3,000 songs and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Parton’s music label, Velvet Apple Music (BMI), released the video.
