Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch is at San Diego Comic Con to promote the animated film Penguins of Madagascar. During an interview with MTV News, he was asked if the rumors were true that he’ll be Marvel’s next Sorcerer Supreme (in Doctor Strange). Cumberbatch said “it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London.”
Englishman Cumberbatch will tread the boards at London’s Barbican Theatre for a 12-week run in the summer of 2015. (Tickets go on sale August 11.) Cumberbatch knows his Shakespeare: he made his acting debut as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream when he was 12. He’s sure to nail Hamlet with his King’s English and send his hometown fans over the moon. But his performance in the forthcoming film, Black Mass? It might be more of a stretch for the talented actor than a centuries old Danish prince. With a South Boston accent, Cumberbatch plays Bill Bulger, former Massachusetts Senator and brother to Whitey (played by Johnny Depp), the mob boss of South Boston who became an FBI informant. Listen to Cumberbatch’s “park the car in Harvard yard” accent, here. What do you think?
