The youthful Benny Luo is the publishing marketing mastermind behind NextShark, the new online magazine for young entrepreneurs. He’s a smart writer (check out his interview with Weblogs’ Jason Calacanis “On Investing in Startups and Fixing the YouTube Ecosystem”) but Luo is lousy at writing his own bio – so here goes. Like Calacanis, Luo is a serial entrepreneur. When not writing clickable articles for NextShark (“11 Things young Entrepreneurs Do That VCs Hate,” and “3 Startup Lessons We Can learn From the 1992 Basketball Olympic Dream Team”), he’s working on his next endeavor DiscoverMe.org (a crowdfunding conference to be held in LA in 2014). Like the sharks he admires, Luo keeps in perpetual motion. Just two years ago he launched NewMediaRockstars (profiles of emerging culture trendsetters and YouTube stars) and before that TheOtherAsians (showcasing creative Asian Americans pursuing unconventional careers like J.T. Tran, the TV dating coach aka The Asian Playboy).
He’s tri-lingual (English, Cantonese, Mandarin), and that’s if you don’t count Silicon Valley-ese as its own language. He speaks that too, which makes four. Luo is a former Yonex-sponsored Junior National Badminton Player.
