Suddenly Solo is an advice website for the mature widowed or divorced man based on the book Suddenly Solo by octogenarian sociologist Harold (Hal) M. Spielman. After serving in WWII, Spielman co-founded McCollum Spielman, a global market research company from which he retired as Chairman in 2008, right around the time he lost Mary, his wife of 32 years. He found himself “truly alone for the first time” in his life. He searched for advice and support but found most catered to women. So Spielman, the trained sociologist, did some research (22% men say its “very important” to have a partner while only 9% women say so) and found there was a demand for help.
Now 85 years old, Spielman keeps busy between his homes in Florida and his native Long Island, New York. When not out on a date or being interviewed for a TV morning show, Spielman can be found online answering “Ask Hal” questions regarding everything from “Can’t Lose the Wedding Ring?” to “The Latest in Lube.”
