New Edition: The Movie is a three-night mini-series on BET that reveals the struggle behind the all-boy R&B band New Edition. The all-boy group from the projects in Roxbury, Massachusetts started out winning talent shows before thinking they hit gold when they got a record deal. Their 1983 hit “Candy Girl” was #1 but they didn’t get their fair share of the profits. And then there was the temperament of lead singer Bobby Brown to deal with.
In New Edition: The Movie, Mike Bivins — who went on to form Bell Biv DeVoe with New Edition members Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe — is portrayed Bryshere Y. Gray. The singer/actor is best known for his role as Hakeem Lyon on Lee Daniels’ TV series Empire. New Edition: The Movie, Part I airs Tuesday, January 24 at 9pm on BET.
