Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez retweeted the sentiments of Professor Chanda Prescod-Weinstein in a wordless commentary on the solidarity of student protestors in the wake of the shooting of Black teenager Ralph Yarl in Kansas City.
Sharing video of Yarl’s classmates marching out of class and chanting “Justice for Ralph,” Prescod-Weinstein wrote “Gen Z is doing cross racial coalition organizing and that’s one of the reasons the GOP is trying to shut down their access to books and history.”

The shared tweet was originally posted by hyper-educated justice advocate Kaivan Shroff, who answered a question about what the students were protesting by saying the students were:
“Demanding justice because this did not occur in a vacuum. Because it took national outcry to even have the man charged. Because they want to blame this young boy for what was a cold blooded, racist, shooting. All he was trying to do was pick up his siblings. Hope that helps.”
Shroff asserts that when Yarl took two bullets from a scared White senior citizen named Andrew Lester — who allegedly told police he was “scared to death” at the sight of the Black teen — Yarl’s classmates don’t believe it was an isolated incident. The student body’s unified front demonstrates their belief that what happened to Yarl was a result of racism incited by numerous politicians and political groups who use divisive racist tactics to stoke fear and gain power.
