On Season 4 of Growing Up Hip Hop, Egypt meets Kristinia’s cousin Kyndall at the gym. Egypt explains to Kyndall that her mother Pepa is her manager. Kyndall says her mother was her manager too — but it didn’t work out at all. Fast forward to Egypt’s bikini photo shoot at the beach. There’s Pepa yelling out encouraging words to Egypt as she poses, “Look at that arch!” but Egypt’s boyfriend Sam is there too. And he’s not sure he likes what he sees. When Pepa asks Sam (rhetorically) “You want to control everything?” Egypt pipes up and says, “He just wants what’s best.” Tee Tee butts in and says, “That’s what Tina Turner said too.” Ouch. (Tina Turner was famously in an abusive relationship with husband Ike Turner for years.) At one point, Pepa yells at Sam, “I’m the manager!”
[Angela Bassett played Tina Turner in the biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It]
Who do you think should manage Egypt’s career? Sure, Pepa has more experience in the entertainment business than Sam, and who wants what’s best for her daughter more than her mother? Or maybe it’s time for Egypt to find a real professional manager. Someone she’s not related to or is dating? Every path to success is different. Growing Up Hip Hop airs Thursdays at 9pm on WE.
