In the Season 2 premiere of Superior Donuts “What the Truck?”, donut shop owner Arthur (Judd Hirsch) is upset when an organic food truck pulls up in front of his store. The truck sells the opposite of donuts — healthy food like acai bowls and paleo smoothies. The owner is a young go-getter named Sofia. She draws the business of Arthur’s loyal customers including Chicago cop Randy DeLuca (Katey Sagal) and the eye of Arthur’s #1 employee Franco (Jermaine Fowler). Sofia is portrayed by Diane Guerrero. She’s known for her roles on Orange Is the New Black (Maritza Ramos), Jane the Virgin (Lina), and in the 2015 TV movie Super Clyde with Charlie McDermott (Axl on The Middle), among others.
Guerrero is also an author. In 2016, she wrote the heartbreaking memoir In the Country We Love: My Family Divided. It’s about Guerrero’s Colombian-born parents being detained and deported when she was 14 years old and in school. Guerrero was born in the US and was allowed to stay, relying on network of family friends to care for her. She endured the devastating separation to find a way to persist and pursue her acting career. Guerrero most recently launched Bicycle Chronicles on Instagram (see below). Superior Donuts airs Mondays at 9pm on CBS, right after 9JKL, and right before Me, Myself and I.
