Anderson Cooper interviews French Populist politician Marine Le Pen on 60 Minutes (March 5). Similar to President Donald Trump’s plans for the U.S., Le Pen says she was to deport all illegal immigrants from France. She also wants to ban religious garb in public including Muslim headscarves and yarmulkes. On 60 Minutes, Le Pen brings up the Burkini, a full-body bathing suit worn by Muslim women on French beaches. Le Pen tells Cooper: “[France] isn’t Burkinis on the beach. France is Brigitte Bardot. That’s France.” Bardot — the famous actress and sex symbol who wasn’t afraid to wear a bikini on the beach — has been fined five times for “inciting racial hatred.” She once complained on her website that Muslims were “destroying our country by imposing their ways.”
Le Pen is the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen who co-founded the National Front and became infamous for questioning the Holocaust and making anti-Semitic remarks. Marine Le Pen has denounced her father’s politics and says the two are estranged. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7pm on CBS.
