The Dateline episode “Haunting” investigates two double homicides in Omaha, Nebraska, five years apart. In 2008, the 11-year-old son of Dr. William Hunter, Thomas, and housekeeper Shirlee Sherman, 57, were found brutally killed in the Hunter home. In 2013, Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary, both 65, were found murdered in their home. In October 2016, 43-year-old Anthony Garcia was found guilty of all four murders and now faces the death penalty in the State of Nebraska.
Prosecutors say Garcia’s motive was revenge — Drs. Hunter and Brumback fired Garcia from Creighton University Medical Center in June 2001. One of Garcia’s bosses in the pathology department at the Medical Center described Garcia in a review as “disruptive, manipulative, anti-authoritarian” and noted that his knowledge was “very poor,” that he “took no initiative” and “no responsibility for his cases.” Garcia’s letter of termination referred to Garcia “sabotaging another resident’s important medical exams.” The letter was signed by Drs. Hunter and Brumback. Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 9pm on NBC.
