Progressives looking for ways and means to battle the Trump administration’s agenda have taken to the streets and town halls, and deluged their legislators with phone calls and emails. But the Trump resistance has lacked focus. This is understandable given the administration’s deliberate efforts to distract and its simultaneous attacks on various democratic institutions — the judiciary, traditional diplomacy, the media, the EPA, the Board of Education, and the intelligence community are all embattled under Trump’s tenure.
Sen. Bernie Sanders is providing priorities for citizens who want to block Trump’s agenda. In a tweet this week, Sanders listed three main elements of the Trump resistance. Calling it “our job,” he set the agenda:
- Expand voter turnout
- Overturn Citizens United
- Fight gerrymandering

Those looking to join the fight against gerrymandering — the redistricting that has given GOP control of so many local offices — can look at the National Democratic Redistricting Committee organized by Eric Holder. Reversing the Supreme Court decision commonly called Citizens United is another difficult task, especially with the conservative weight of a Trump-fueled Supreme Court. Information about action against Citizens United can be found at EndCitizensUnited.org. Voter turnout is dismal in the US even for big national elections. Sanders recognizing tackling this problem is critical.
Our job: Fight back. Expand voter turnout. Overturn Citizens United. Fight gerrymandering. Create a vibrant democracy.
