In the Modern Family episode ‘Sarge & Pea’, while Cam (Eric Stonestreet) seeks revenge on a parent whom he thinks deprived him at Lily’s dance recital, his husband Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) greets his mother Dede at a family wedding. Mitch and his sister Claire (Julie Bowen) try their best to keep Dede away from their father Jay (Ed O’Neill) who is also attending the wedding.
Dede is portrayed by Shelley Long. She’s best known for her roles as Diane Chambers on Cheers and Frasier, as Carol Brady in The Brady Bunch movies, and in the hilarious 1986 Richard Benjamin film The Money Pit with Tom Hanks. Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9pm on ABC.
