These days Steven Spielberg — the world’s most famous film director — could certainly secure the English invitation he’s been after since the 1970s. Spielberg is a “huge James Bond fan” and apparently always wanted to direct a 007 caper. Spielberg said he tried to get the job after Jaws came out, but the Bond franchise boss Albert “Cubby” Broccoli rejected his plea. Spielberg tried again after Close Encounters wowed audiences and the box office, yet still a “no thanks” from Broccoli, according to an excerpt in Express.
Broccoli’s daughter Barbara took over the Bond franchise in 1996, but Spielberg’s offer no longer stands. He said jokingly she couldn’t afford him now. Spielberg is busy promoting his new film The BFG, about the Big Friendly Giant created by British author Roald Dahl.
