La’Porsha Renae is one of the Top 5 singers competing on the fifteenth and final season of American Idol. As a favorite to win – the original American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson says so – many of her fans were surprised to learn that La’Porsha stutters. When asked what has been the biggest change she’s noticed about herself since American Idol, she said “I’m more comfortable talking in front of people, and I don’t stutter as much. Nobody knew that, but it was really bad.”
La’Porsha isn’t the only singer on American Idol who stutters. On Season 12 (2013), 22-year-old Cuban-American Lazaro Arbos revealed a severe stutter when he spoke but when he sang, the stutter disappeared (see video below). He made it to the finals (to sixth place) but Candice Glover the title. American Idol airs Thursdays at 8pm on FOX.
