On Season 10 of The Voice, the four coaches perform the 1976 Stevie Wonder song “I Wish” together. While Pharrell Williams is on the drums, country star Blake Shelton kicks off the song by replacing the first line: “Looking back on when I was a little nappy headed boy” with “Looking back on when I was a little Oklahoma boy.” Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera chime in. Shelton does two smart things with his lyrical switcheroo: like a pro he personalizes the song, of course, but he also avoids a phrase that’s even less politically correct than it was when Wonder first penned the classic.
“I Wish” was written by the creative genius Stevie Wonder exactly 40 years ago. It’s from his Songs In the Key of Life album which also includes “Sir Duke” and “Isn’t She Lovely” among others. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
