Now that The X-Files is back on TV, conspiracies are hot again. After the season opener, a Pentagon spokesman took the time to deny that the US is funding “an alien/human hybrid colonization.” And the Department of Defense isn’t trying to make Americans obese. “I can’t imagine why anyone would possibly think that the DoD would be involved with something like that. Not only would it be illegal and immoral — it would also be stupid. We look for healthy, intelligent young Americans to recruit as members of our armed forces of tomorrow.”
The go-to conspiracy theorist in the show’s revival is a new character played by Joel McHale, who seems to be modeled on Alex Jones of Infowars. But fans of the show can also rejoice in the return of The Lone Gunmen, even though they were killed off years ago. Are the trio alive or dead? “Our appearance on the show is consistent with both those possibilities,” says actor Bruce Harwood. Were their deaths faked? Or are they dead and Mulder and Scully are being fed a line by three men who look suspiciously like them? The truth is out there … or is it?
