On The Carmichael Show, the family’s reverend comes over for dinner. On his way home from the Carmichael’s house, the reverend is hit by a car. Jerrod’s mother Cynthia blames Jerrod’s girlfriend Maxine – who disregards prayer – for the accident. A heated argument about religion and spirituality ensues.

The Reverend is portrayed by Isiah Whitlock, Jr. The veteran actor is best known for his TV roles on Law & Order: SVU (Captain Reese) and The Wire (State Sen. R. Clayton “Clay” Davis), and for his distinctive delivery of the word “shit.” (See montage of clips below.) Whitlock can also be seen in the comedy Veep as Secretary of Defense George Maddox. The Carmichael Show airs Wednesdays at 9pm and 9:30pm.
