The Spotify Top 50 reveals that The Weeknd is the biggest music act in the US. Or maybe it’s Drake. It’s not just about the biggest hit either. The Top 50 saturation by a few names stands against conventional wisdom that a single hit drives everything these days, Sure, “Can’t Feel My Face” is a smash — but The Weeknd has SIX songs in the Spotifiy Top 50 (U.S.). Hey that’s a virtual album.
Justin Bieber is the other big winner in the Spotify sweepstakes. The Biebs career has proved far more durable than naysayers predicted — and the crafty pop careerist is perched in the No. 1 spot with “What Do You Mean?” — whose title sounds like a direct answer to The Weeknd’s statement in a really stoned conversation. (Weeknd: “can’t feel my face.” Beiber: “what do you mean, man?”) Drake has six tracks in the Top 50 too. And Fetty Wap‘s got five tracks in the Spotify Top 50. Take Drake (six), The Weeknd (six), Fetty Wap (five) and Bieber (two). Add a little Ed Sheeran (three) and you’ve got nearly half the Top 50 right there.
