Forty-year-old political operator Corey Lewandowski didn’t even meet Donald Trump until last year. But a year later Lewandowski finds himself in charge of the hottest political campaign in the country, as Donald Trump has surged to the GOP lead through a combination of unrivaled provocation and generous media coverage. (Even when the media coverage is negative, Trump sure manages to get a lot of it. As Arby’s and Lewandowski will tell you, any attention will serve.)

Lewandowski is used to working for billionaires. His most recent billionaire employers (before Trump) operated a little differently: David and Charles Koch do their work behind the scenes instead of in front of cameras like Trump. Until early this year Lewandowski ran Americans for Prosperity, the largest of the Koch brothers’ political advocacy concerns — and the main backer of Tea Party candidates. The Kochs are even richer than Donald Trump claims to be. Lewandowski is originally from Lowell, Massachussetts and now lives in New Hampshire. He has a master’s degree in political science from American University in Washington.
