Donald Trump is a taunting bully — and a certain sector of American voters seem to like it. How do you get away with that, especially if you’re a rich guy? Pick on another rich guy — preferably one who went to all the elite schools and has a brother and father who were president. (And don’t much mention you’re an Ivy League guy yourself — Trump went to Penn.)
On the campaign trail, Trump has been hammering rival presidential candidate Jeb Bush worse than what Jeb has experienced since his older brother George W. Bush left for college. Bush is “boring,” his credentials on education are “pathetic,” according to Trump, who says Bush is beginning to “crumble.” In response, Bush is sticking with facts, a strategy with a meager history of success. Bush says Trump’s call to round up all the illegal immigrants and deport them, which excites his core audience, would cost “hundreds of billions of dollars [and] violate people’s civil liberties.” Unfortunately for Bush, that prospect — a stomping of civil liberties — doesn’t much dampen the cheers at Trump rallies. He didn’t say he was taking away people’s guns or anything.
