A 37-year-old Miami man, Orlando Mesa, took his infant son Noah for a walk. Still in diapers, the boy pushed a toy car. At the corner, not far from their home, two men jumped out of a car, shot Orlando dead, and fled. Baby Noah was badly injured — he was shot in the arm and a bullet also grazed his leg. One month before the shooting, police seized two large bags of marijuana from Mesa.
One month after Mesa was shot, widow Janepsy Mesa Carballo shot a man who she “found” in her bedroom. She believed the man, Ilan Nissim, an acquaintance of her husband, was Orlando’s assassin. She allegedly lured him to the house and shot him multiple times in the back. She called 911 and claimed self-defense. After being interviewed by the police, she was released. No charges were filed, at first. Two years later she was charged with killing Nissim. She was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Janepsy thought Nissim killed her husband over a bad business deal. She said Orlando had given Nissim $180k for a real estate transaction, but the money was later stolen. The case of the Mesa family will be told on Dateline NBC on July 10 at 10pm.
