$46.5 million may seem like a lot to pay for a 8×6-foot canvas that doesn’t even have a title. But Sotheby’s expected Mark Rothko’s “Untitled, (Yellow and Blue)” might fetch a little more. It had been estimated at between $40 million and $60 million. It was not revealed whether the buyer would have gone higher had there been just a little more blue. Or yellow.
Rothko, an enormously popular and “accessible” 20th century master, killed himself in 1970 at the age of 66.
