Pamela Smart was the 22-year-old married woman who had an affair with 16-year-old Billy Flynn. Flynn killed Pamela’s husband, Gregg Smart, in a calculated crime of passion. Pamela Smart was convicted of conspiring with Billy to kill Gregg in 1990. Their story inspired Joyce Maynard to write the novel To Die For, which was turned into a movie starring Nicole Kidman. (Joaquin Phoenix played Billy. Matt Dillon played Gregg.)
Billy has served his time and was granted parole on his first attempt this week. He is now 41 years old. While in jail he got married and earned his GED and electrician’s helper license. He said finding a job will be his biggest challenge when out. “The first thing they learn about me is the worst thing I’ve ever done,” Flynn said. “I will always feel terrible about what happened 25 years ago,” he said. “Parole will not change that.”
