Husband and wife TV producers, Maria and Andy Awes, have reenacted the 2007 collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis. They interviewed survivors, built a 100-foot-wide section of the bridge, and blended scripted reenactments with original TV footage. The Awes team hopes their finished product – which will air Saturday March 7 on “In An Instant” (8pm, ABC) — will do the story justice.
Andy Awes said: “None of us (Committee Films staff) were on the bridge, but every single person who’s from the Twin Cities right after it happened said, ‘Oh my God, I just drove over that bridge yesterday or earlier today. I’ve been over that bridge 500 times.’” Maria Awes added, “We worked hard to make them [the reenactments] as accurate as possible as to what took place that day of the tragedy.”
