The wealthy suburb of Great Neck on Long Island got hit with an anti-Semitic shock this weekend when the Facebook page for its freshman class got defaced. A student posted an anti-Semitic photo depicting a young kid seated at a table. A swastika and Hitler-style mustache had been painted on him with the caption “I’D RATHER BE GASSING JEWS RIGHT NOW.” The image remained on the page from Friday until Sunday, when it was removed. The page is a “closed group” of more than 200 members just for the freshman class of Great Neck South.
Great Neck administrators swiftly and strongly condemned the action. In a statement Monday School Superintendent Dr. Thomas P. Dolan said both that the Facebook page was not “school-sponsored or supported” and that they had “determined the name of the individual who made this posting and determined that this individual is not a student in our schools.” But the perpetrator is a student–Dolan said “police were notified, as was the student’s current school.”
