In an interview with Katie Couric, Bill Gates addresses income inequality by saying that “philanthropy is part of how we deal with those inequities.” Slip of the tongue for Gates? Inequity, unlike inequality, is defined as a “lack of fairness or justice.” Inequity’s synonyms include discrimination, favoritism, prejudice, and injustice.
In the same interview, Melinda Gates–Mr. Gates’ wife and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation–says, “philanthropy can point the light on an issue that maybe isn’t being funded.” The she adds, incredibly, that it “always takes government to come in and fund these things.” The Gates Foundation lists assets of $42.3 billion.
