The Warner Bros./DC Comics superhero movie Suicide Squad has been given a start date. Production of the movie will begin in April. Fury director David Ayer will helm the project, and the cast includes Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Tom Hardy and Will Smith. While this is good news for fanboys, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the role of Amanda Waller has not yet been cast. “Who will end up taking up the role of Amanda Waller, the woman responsible for putting the team together and manipulating every scenario so that she comes out on top? Until we know the answer to that question, it’s still too early to get excited — even if the line-up so far (and presence of David Ayer as director) seems more than a little promising.”
Suicide Squad is about a group of convicted supervillains, including the Joker, who are given a chance to have their records expunged in exchange for taking on dangerous missions for the government. Leto will play the Joker; Smith will play Deadshot; Hardy will play Rick Flag; Robbie will play Harley Quinn. Another DC comic, the similarly themed Dark Justice, is also in development as a movie project at Warner Bros. With these two projects as well as the Justice League movies in the pipeline (Superman, Batman et al), DC Comics might overtake its rival Marvel when it comes to the box-office.
