The title of J. Cole’s new album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, is the address of the singer’s childhood home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It’s a three bedroom, 2 bath, 1698 square foot single family home, which he bought back this summer for $121,000. He lived in that house until he went to St. John’s University in New York City. While Cole was away at college, his mother wasn’t able to make the house payments and 2014 Forest Hills Drive was eventually foreclosed on. In Apparently, J. Cole explains that he was too busy “chasin’ panties, getting’ dome” at St. John’s to notice his mother’s struggle. “Had no clue what you was goin’ through” he sings to his mother. “How could you be so strong? / And how could I be so selfish, I know I can be so selfish.” He regrets it now.
J. Cole says the album is all about love, not money. He writes: “F#!& Money, Spread Love.” However, he does make sure to brag about his AP (Audemars Piguet watch) in Apparently.
