The Pitch Perfect 2 trailer landed on the web yesterday with a ludicrous message for college women. The sequel to the popular Pitch Perfect is about an all-female collegiate a cappella group vying for the World Championship title. On campus, the singers (Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow) practice, mingle with men, and have a lot of fun.
But the trailer features one horrible exchange between the singer played by Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine’s character. At a party on campus, he approaches her and asks if she would like to have sex later. She says, defiantly, no! and then winks. He voices his confusion. “You said no but winked. So that’s a no then?” he asks. “That’s 100 percent no,” she says, but then she winks again. In light of recent reports regarding ‘rape culture’ and an increase of sexual assaults reported on American college campuses–and with some campuses blaming victims in sexual assault cases--is this scene depicting a young woman sending mixes messages about sex helping the situation? At the very least, it’s way off pitch.
