Bono and his stupid sunglasses are back in the news. Actually, the U2 singer is back in the news because of his stupid sunglasses, as he has revealed that he has to wear them because of his glaucoma, which makes his eyes more sensitive to light. Talking to BBC’s Graham Norton, Bono said “This is a good place to explain to people that I’ve had glaucoma for the last 20 years. I have good treatments and I am going to be fine.” He then added: “You’re not going to get this out of your head now and you will be saying, ‘Ah, poor old blind Bono.’”
I suppose talking about his bad eyesight is more comfortable than talking about the embarrassing PR misfire surrounding the band’s launch of its new album. The free giveaway on Apple has resulted in more U2 hatred than usual, and although Bono admits “we got carried away with ourselves,” he still thinks people should be grateful for the free download, or at least, be grateful that they now have a whipping-boy. “We wanted to do something fresh but it seems some people don’t believe in Father Christmas. All those people who were uninterested in U2 are now mad at U2. As far as we are concerned, it’s an improvement.”
