John Green has had a busy summer. Not only was his New York Times best selling book The Fault in Our Stars well received by critics and at the box office but the author and YouTube-star also attended VidCon, a conference he co-created with his brother Hank. Now that John Green is temporarily done with Hollywood he’s off in Ethiopia with billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates. Random, right?
Not so random if you know John Green. Separate from everything else Green has done, he and his brother also founded the Foundation to Decrease Worldsuck which hosts a yearly “Project for Awesome.” The Project for Awesome is a day “thousands of people post videos about and advocating for charities that decrease the overall level of world suck.” This past year’s Project raised $869,171. That money coupled with a video Green posted in January–in which the author “discusses the three myths at the center of Bill and Melinda Gates’s 2013 annual letter”– must have caught the Gates Foundation’s attention.
