It’s taken the British National Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland nearly four years to raise the £45million (US$72 million) needed to buy Titian’s renaissance masterpiece “Diana and Callisto” from its owner, Francis Egerton, 7th Duke of Sutherland. The painting will now be reunited (on public display) with its companion piece “Diana and Actaeon,” also purchased by the two galleries from the Duke in 2009.
Egerton is ranked 107th in the Sunday Times Rich List in 2009, with an estimated wealth £480m (US$764 million) in art and land.
