TurboTax delivers the funny in its ‘Compensating’ commercial featuring a client dressed in an ascot, blue blazer and shades — with a conspicuous yacht in the background. The yacht isn’t real but the client’s $9 coconut is. Too bad too, because it’s a prop he doesn’t need: what he thinks is a video call is just regular old audio on his end — only the TurboTax CPA is live on video. The CPA reveals that she went through his return “line by line and everything looks great.” The faking client tells her, while trying to look suave and billionare-ish, that his “income won’t always be this modest.”
“No worries, we’re here to help,” replies the CPA. To which ascot-yacht-guy says, “I got a lot of things going, so next year should be pretty impressive.” When his co-worker calls him out, saying he’s not on a yacht but in a conference room, client-ascot-yacht guy’s charade unravels, especially when he realizes he’s not even on video. Actor Dan White, who plays the client, crushes the scene — regretting his $9 coconut perfectly.
White gives his character a Will Ferrell-like sense of unearned confidence, and then delivers an excellent little fit of pique when he’s outed as a fake. Dan White is not just an actor, but a writer too — not surprising given his great timing. And he really wants to be on Saturday Night Live, as you’ll learn from his tweets. Check out Dan in this great video with legendary actor/comedian Bill Murray below. And learn more about the excellent, vastly talented Dan White here. You’ll also learn that Dan really likes planes — probably more than yachts even. (And check out his digital web series.)
