On the fifth round of auditions for Season 13 of America’s Got Talent, judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel meet Troy James. Wearing a tight, mock business suit jacket and tie, Troy says he works as a human resources professional. Before he surprises them with his performance, Mel B tells Howie, “Oh, he’s so shy and sweet.” Chime in the freaky circus music and Troy James does what he does best — contort. The tall lanky man transforms and moves his body like a supernatural creature. It’s one of those performances where many in the audience are watching through the fingers covering their eyes. His performance is weird, disturbing and spooky.
[Watch Troy move like a mongrel on The Strain, if you dare]
This isn’t Troy James’s first time on TV. He’s an actor too. He’s known for playing a street mongrel in Guillermo del Toro’s horror series The Strain on FX (see link above). On The Strain, mongrels are like human guard dogs. They have extraordinary powers — dexterity, speed and strength. Actress Ruta Gedmintas who plays Dutch Velders says of Troy: “The way he manipulates his muscles is something I’ve never seen before. We didn’t even have to have special effects on him because this was the actor. He’s so good at this kind of movement. So, watch out for him,” she says with a smile. New episodes of America’s Got Talent air Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
