Round 3 of The Battles on The Voice is going to be an emotional one for rookie coach Kelly Clarkson. She’s pitted two of her youngest, most talented artists against each other: Alexa Cappelli, 18, and Hannah Goebel, 21. And then she’ll watch an emotional performance by two of Adam Levine’s artists — Genesis Diaz and Mia Boostrom. The two powerhouse female singers will sing Clarkson’s 2005 song “Because of You.” It’s sung from the perspective of an adult who catches herself repeating her parents’ mistakes. She wrote the song about the emotional stress she endured as a child during her parents divorce. Story goes Clarkson wrote the lyrics in 25 minutes. She said “it’s the most depressing song I’ve ever written.”

During an interview with MTV News, Clarkson said of the “Because of You” music video (see below): “It’s a sad song, so the video obviously has to follow that. But it ends really happy and everything and the family, my family, ends up breaking the cycle of my parents.” Clarkson later married in 2013 and is the mother of two young children. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
