In the Dateline episode “Devil’s Bathtub,” Andrea Canning investigates the disappearance and murder of Craig Rideout, a family man in Rochester, New York. His disfigured body was found in a field called Devil’s Bathtub in Mendon Ponds Park. (His face and fingerprints were burned off with an acid-based drain cleaner in an attempt to hide his identity). Canning reports that when the police started their investigation they found multiple suspects within his own family including his wife Laura, mother of his seven children.
Canning reports that “Money problems allegedly led to marital problems.” A divorce followed with “a sticky custody arrangement with the two youngest children.” In July 2017, Craig’s wife Laura Rideout and his son Colin Rideout were convicted of second-degree murder for the strangulation of Craig Rideout. (According to the prosecution, Laura and Colin broke into Craig’s townhouse, killed him in the basement, and then cleaned the apartment.) Laura and Colin (and Laura’s other son Alexander Rideout) were also convicted of tampering with evidence. All three plan to appeal. Craig Rideout’s mother Ness Rideout said after the verdict, “I’m pleased to have justice for him (Craig), but as a grandmother I do have mixed emotions.” Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 10pm.
