The One America Appeal featuring five former presidents was nationally televised during the opening NFL broadcast on NBC Thursday night. The spot is called “Our Friends in Texas”, but even as it debuted the presidents were aware that Irma, an even more powerful storm, is about to strike Florida. A release from George H.W. Bush’s office that was shared by The Carter Center says that the five presidents have readied a second ‘One America Appeal’, stating that a “second PSA that addresses both hurricanes will launch over the weekend.”
Harvey has reportedly displaced a million people, causing an estimated $180 billion in damages as it ripped through 300 miles of Texas, hitting the Houston area especially hard. The current appeal by the five former presidents — Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama — can be seen at oneamericaappeal.org. The new video that considers the destruction caused by Irma will also be available there. Donations are tax deductible. The former presidents issued this statement with the first video: “Hurricane Harvey brought terrible devastation – but it also brought out the best in humanity. As former Presidents, we wanted to come together and join our fellow citizens in supporting Houston and the communities along the Gulf Coast as they rebuild.”
