Chris Cornell, self-professed “big big fan” of Howard Stern, was on Stern’s show ten years ago and the result is two truth-telling entertainers getting after it. A lot of respect passing back and forth between the two. And in light of Cornell’s horrible suicide this week, there is a lot that sounds poignant in hindsight. Cornell was one of the most talented vocalists of his era, and a huge rock star to boot (not always the same package, those two things). Stern did his usual mining for the real, and Cornell delivered.

Cornell enters with his guitar and a smile, and Robin says “I always thought he was moody and miserable.” Stern asked why she thought that. “He always looked tortured to me.” Cornell said it was just a reputation. Then Cornell launched into his history of drug use that started at 12, from drinking to pot to the dreaded PCP.
